In short From 2027, the SEC replaces the O-Level and N-Level examinations. G1, G2 and G3 English each have their own syllabus and criteria, so a student should prepare for the level they will sit. English counts for what comes next: many ITE courses ask for English, English is part of the score used for polytechnic admission, and it counts for junior college admission. Language takes a long time to reach competency. Sentence structure and vocabulary are what let a student write well. Our small classes cover Writing, Comprehension, Listening and Oral, with in-house materials and our online learning platform. |
Secondary English asks more of students every year: longer texts, more precise writing, and a spoken exam that is now delivered on a computer. EduReach's Tampines centre, at Blk 201E Tampines Street 23 and within walking distance of Tampines East MRT, teaches English at G1, G2 and G3, focusing on the new SEC exam. We are here to help your child move forward, whatever level they are at.

What Is Different in the New Exam?
Under Full Subject-Based Banding, students take English at G1, G2 or G3. All three levels have four papers: Writing, Comprehension, Listening and Oral. Here is how they differ:

Because the criteria differ, we teach each student to the level they will sit, not to a general English standard.
Why English Counts After Secondary School
English does not stop mattering when the exams are over. It counts for the next step:
- ITE: many ITE courses ask for a pass in English Language. This includes business, hospitality and nursing courses, according to ITE's published requirements.
- Polytechnic: English Language is part of the aggregate score used for polytechnic admission.
- Junior college: English counts towards junior college admission.
Requirements change from year to year, and they are changing for the new exam, so please check the latest details with MOE, ITE and the school or polytechnic your child is aiming for.
How Our English Classes Work
Our English classes are small, so every child is heard and every piece of work is seen. We teach all aspects of the English exam, and we rotate through them so that no paper is left until the last minute:
- Paper 1, Writing: situational writing and continuous writing, built on sentence structure and vocabulary.
- Paper 2, Comprehension and language use: reading closely, answering what is asked, and using language accurately.
- Listening comprehension: training the ear to catch details, feelings and purpose.
- Oral: reading and speaking with clarity, and holding a conversation.
We use our own in-house materials, together with our online learning platform, EduReachLearn.
EduReachLearn: practice at home, at your child's level
EduReachLearn (edureachlearn.com) has courses for all four subjects we teach: English, Math, Malay and Science. Students can use it at home, and each child has access to their own level. The English course includes listening exercises, so your child can practise listening comprehension between lessons.
Composition: Why Sentences and Vocabulary Come First
Many parents worry most about composition, and it is easy to understand why. But the ability to write well depends first on two things: sentence structure and vocabulary. A child who has the words and knows how to build a sentence can write a good story. A child who does not will struggle, however many model compositions they memorise.
Here is one sentence, before and after:
|
Sentence |
|
|
Before |
The traffic was bad and many people were angry. |
|
After |
Hemmed in by crawling traffic, commuters honked in frustration, and tempers began to fray. |
What changed? "Hemmed in by crawling traffic" opens with a phrase that sets the scene. "Honked in frustration" shows the anger through an action. "Tempers began to fray" uses an expression that a student can only choose if they know it. Better vocabulary and stronger sentence patterns, not a memorised model composition, are what lift a piece of writing.
This is not a template to memorise. It shows what a child can do once the words and sentence patterns are there, and building them takes steady practice over time.
Realistic Expectations, and What We Promise
Language grows slowly, and every student grows at a different pace. Progress often shows first in confidence, then in sentences and answers that read more smoothly, and later in test and exam marks. Results also depend on attendance, reading at home and support from the family. No tuition centre can guarantee a grade, and parents should be cautious of any that do.
What we can promise is steady, patient help. We are here to help your child move forward, and we celebrate progress, big or small.
