Primary Math Tuition in Tampines: Heuristics, the Language of Math, at EduReach

In short

Heuristics are not shortcuts to memorise. They are the language of math, the tools that let a child read a word problem and understand what it is really asking.

Heuristics start early. The model method begins as early as Primary 1, and more heuristics are added as your child moves up each level.

By Primary 5 and 6, children use a wider range of heuristics, and some earlier methods are dropped in favour of more efficient ones for the harder problems at this stage.

Standard and Foundation Math both exist at Primary 5 and 6, and we teach both, in small classes with our own materials and an online learning platform.

A child who "cannot do problem sums" is very often a child who has not yet learnt to read what the problem is saying. EduReach's Tampines centre, at Blk 201E Tampines Street 23 and within walking distance of Tampines East MRT, teaches Primary Math from P1 to P6, and we build heuristics carefully, one stage at a time, so that word problems stop feeling like a foreign language.

Heuristics: The Language of Math

A heuristic is a way of thinking about a problem, not a fixed formula. The model method, for example, is a way of drawing what a word problem describes, so that a child can see the relationships between numbers before choosing what to calculate. Learning heuristics is a little like learning a new language: your child first learns the basic words and sentences, then more complex grammar, and eventually can read passages they have never seen before and still understand them.

Heuristics start early and build up over time. The model method is introduced as early as Primary 1, and your child adds more heuristics to their toolkit at every level after that. By Primary 5 and 6, there are many more heuristics in use, and the problems themselves ask for more than one heuristic at a time.

One example of this growth: in Primary 3 and 4, children often rely on Guess-and-Check to work through a problem. By Primary 5 and 6, we move students away from Guess-and-Check and towards more precise methods, such as the remainder concept, because Guess-and-Check becomes too slow and unreliable for the harder, multi-step problems at this stage. Learning when to retire an early method for a more efficient one is part of growing fluent in the language of math.

We do not believe in teaching every possible heuristic by name and hoping one sticks. We teach your child to read the problem, recognise what it is asking, and choose the right tool, the same way a fluent reader chooses the right word.

Standard and Foundation Math at Primary 5 and 6

From Primary 5, students can take Math at Standard or Foundation level, and we teach both. Foundation Math covers a narrower syllabus, some topics are simplified, and the questions are more direct. For example, working with fractions in Foundation Math is generally less demanding than in Standard Math.

For the PSLE Score, Foundation grades are graded A to C, and the best result, Grade A, is mapped to AL6, the same as an AL6 in Standard Math. Standard Math is scored from AL1 to AL8, so a wider range of results is possible. The right level depends on your child's readiness and confidence, and your child's school will advise. A free diagnostic assessment can help you decide.

How Our Math Classes Work

Our Math classes are small, so every child's working is seen and every mistake is understood, not just corrected. We rotate through topics and heuristics in a set order, with in-house materials and our online learning platform, EduReachLearn.

EduReachLearn: practice at home, at your child's level

EduReachLearn (edureachlearn.com) is our Learning Management System. It has the latest MOE syllabus in quizzes and fill-in-the-blank questions, and some open-ended questions are marked by a teacher. It has courses for English, Math, Malay and Science, and all students have access to the LMS for the subject they enrol in. Students can use it at home, at their own level.

Realistic Expectations: How Soon Will You See Improvement?

Heuristics build on each other, so how quickly a child improves depends on how solid the earlier stages are. A child who is shaky on the model method from P3 or P4 will find the P5 and P6 heuristics harder to learn. Progress often shows first in confidence with reading the question, then in choosing the right method, and later in test and exam marks.

Results also depend on attendance, practice at home and support from the school. No tuition centre can guarantee a specific grade, and parents should be cautious of any that do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are heuristics in PSLE Math?

Heuristics are problem-solving methods, such as the model method, that help a child understand and work through a word problem. They are not shortcuts to memorise, but ways of thinking that build up from Primary 1 to Primary 6.

When does my child start learning heuristics?

As early as Primary 1, with the model method. More heuristics are added at every level after that, with the widest range used at Primary 5 and 6.

My child still uses Guess-and-Check at Primary 5. Is that a problem?

It can be. Guess-and-Check is useful at Primary 3 and 4, but by Primary 5 and 6, the problems usually need more precise methods, such as the remainder concept. A child who relies only on Guess-and-Check may find these problems too slow to solve in the exam.

What is the difference between Standard and Foundation Math?

Foundation Math covers a narrower syllabus, with some topics simplified, such as fractions. The best Foundation result, Grade A, is mapped to AL6, the same as an AL6 in Standard Math, which is scored from AL1 to AL8.

Do you teach Foundation Math at Primary 5 and 6?

Yes. We teach both Standard and Foundation Math, and a free diagnostic assessment can help decide which level suits your child.

What does your Math class cover?

We rotate through topics and heuristics in a set order, in small classes, with in-house materials and our online learning platform, EduReachLearn.

Do you offer a trial class or diagnostic assessment?

Yes. You can arrange a trial lesson and a free diagnostic assessment to identify your child's strengths and gaps before deciding.

What are the fees?
