What Do Children Learn in Primary Malay at EduReach Hougang?

We follow the MOE Malay syllabus and teach it in stages, so that each year builds on the last.

•     Primary 1 and 2: sounds and syllables, reading short texts, everyday vocabulary, writing simple sentences, and speaking with confidence.

•     Primary 3 and 4: sentence building, grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives and function words), proverbs (peribahasa), short compositions from picture prompts, reading comprehension, and clear reading aloud.

•     Primary 5 and 6: the full PSLE format, including composition, language use and comprehension, listening, and the oral examination, with regular timed practice.

EduReach Hougang opened in 2021 and has become one of our three centres, alongside Tampines and Woodlands. Malay lessons here draw on assessment books written by the EduReach team and practice on our own learning platform, so children move between lessons and home study without changing style.

How Does Malay Count for the PSLE?

The PSLE Score adds together four subjects: English, Math, Science and Mother Tongue, each scored from AL 1 to AL 8. For Malay families, Mother Tongue is Malay, so one Achievement Level in Malay is worth the same number of points as one in any other subject. How We Prepare Children for Each PSLE Malay Paper

Standard Malay has four papers worth 200 marks in total.

•     Composition (20%): children plan a story, choose vocabulary that fits the picture or theme, and use proverbs naturally rather than forcing them in. We practise sentence variety and self-editing.

•     Language Use and Comprehension (45%): the largest paper. We drill grammar and proverb patterns, teach vocabulary in context, and practise answering comprehension questions in full, accurate sentences.

•     Listening Comprehension (10%): short listening tasks in different text types, so that children learn to catch key details the first time they hear them. Listening comprehension practice is also available on EduReachLearn, so children can keep practising at home.

•     Oral (25%): reading aloud with clear pronunciation, stress and intonation, and holding a conversation about a picture or theme. Oral and listening together carry 35% of the marks, and we practise them alongside the written papers. Oral practice is on EduReachLearn too, and Primary 5 and 6 students can use our video practice exercises to prepare for the PSLE.

Standard Malay and Foundation Malay at EduReach Hougang

From Primary 5, students can take Malay at Foundation level. For the PSLE Score, Foundation grades A to C are mapped to AL 6 to AL 8, so Foundation Malay can add at best an AL 6, while Standard Malay can reach AL 1. We teach both levels. EduReachLearn and Brain Gym: What Makes Our Malay Classes Different

EduReachLearn (edureachlearn.com) is our in-house Learning Management System. It puts the latest MOE syllabus into quizzes and fill-in-the-blank questions, with some open-ended questions marked by a teacher. Every student can use it at home for the subject they are enrolled in, and each child works at their own level. For Primary Malay, the courses run from Primary 1 to Primary 6 and follow the layout of the PSLE papers: composition, language use and comprehension, listening and oral. Listening comprehension and oral practice are built into the Primary courses, and Primary 5 and 6 students also have video practice to help with PSLE preparation.

Our founder, Mdm Sharifah Md Kassim, is a certified Brain Gym Movement Facilitator, and EduReach uses Brain Gym movements in lessons. Brain Gym is a set of simple movements, such as the cross crawl and drinking water, that many teachers use to help children settle, focus and feel ready to learn. We use them for exactly those moments: at the start of a lesson, before a reading-aloud task, or when a child is nervous about speaking. Movement is one part of how we help children feel ready. The progress itself comes from practice and good teaching.

Which Malay levels do you teach at Hougang?
