What Has Changed in the Primary Math Syllabus?

MOE introduced a revised Primary Math syllabus in 2021, starting with Primary 1 and rolling out level by level. The cohort that started Primary 1 in 2021 is the first to sit PSLE Math under the fully revised syllabus in 2026.

Topic changes parents should know

•       Speed: removed from the primary syllabus and PSLE. It is now introduced in Secondary 1.

•       Average and Ratio: moved from Primary 5 to Primary 6.

•       Pie Charts and Nets: now taught in Primary 4.

•       Basic algebra: Primary 6 students now work with letters to represent numbers, simple algebraic expressions and simple linear equations, which builds a bridge to secondary Math.

The overall aim is to spread the workload more evenly, particularly at Primary 5, which used to be a steep jump for many students.

A stronger focus on reasoning

The syllabus places more emphasis on understanding, problem-solving and mathematical reasoning than on memorising procedures. Students are expected to explain their thinking, and to use tools such as bar models to make sense of word problems. Removing Speed does not make the PSLE easier; the emphasis moves to multi-step, reasoning-based questions.

Secondary Math: G1, G2 and G3

Since 2024, MOE has replaced the Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams with subject-based banding at three levels: G1, G2 and G3. Students can take different subjects at different levels, so a child may take Math at a level that differs from some of their other subjects. EduReach Woodlands offers Secondary Math at G1, G2 and G3.

Secondary Math builds on the primary foundation with a strong focus on algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability, and on applying Math to real-life situations. Speed, which was removed from the primary syllabus, is introduced in Secondary 1, where students can approach it with algebra.

•       Lower Secondary (Sec 1-2): strengthening algebra, geometry and data handling, and making the jump from primary to secondary Math smoother.

•       Upper Secondary (Sec 3-4): preparing for the national examinations. Students who take Additional Mathematics also study calculus, which is not part of the core Mathematics syllabus.
