Higher Malay is a more demanding Malay subject for students who are already strong in the language. It is taken in addition to Standard Malay at PSLE, its results do not count towards the PSLE Score, and it can lead to Higher Malay in secondary school. EduReach teaches Higher Malay at Tampines, Hougang and Woodlands.
This guide explains what Higher Malay is, how the PSLE Higher Malay papers are set out, who qualifies for Higher Malay in secondary school, and how we prepare students.

What Is Higher Malay, and How Is It Different From Standard Malay?
Standard Malay is the Mother Tongue subject used in the PSLE Score. Higher Malay goes further: the writing is longer, the grammar and proverb questions are more demanding, and the comprehension passages are longer. Students take it in addition to Standard Malay, so a child who takes Higher Malay still has to do well in Standard Malay, because that is the grade that goes into the PSLE Score.
Higher Malay is graded differently too. Instead of Achievement Levels, PSLE Higher Malay uses Distinction (80 to 100 marks), Merit (65 to 79), Pass (50 to 64) and Ungraded (0 to 49).
What Does the PSLE Higher Malay Exam Test?
PSLE Higher Malay has two written papers worth 100 marks in total. There is no oral or listening paper in Higher Malay.

Who Can Take Higher Malay in Secondary School?
MOE sets the entry rule. A student is eligible for Higher Malay in secondary school with either of these:
- a PSLE Score of 8 or better; or
- a PSLE Score of 9 to 14, together with AL 1 or AL 2 in Malay, or a Distinction or Merit in Higher Malay.
Secondary schools can use discretion to admit students who do not meet these criteria but show high ability. Primary Higher Malay is usually arranged through the school, so please ask your child's Malay teacher whether they are eligible. In secondary school, Higher Malay is offered at G3 level, and results from the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) from 2027 are graded on the G3 scale (A1 to 9).
Is Higher Malay Worth It? An Honest Look
Higher Malay is a good fit for children who enjoy Malay, read and write it with confidence, and want to go deeper. It also builds the depth of language that helps with the standard Malay papers. There are trade-offs that parents should know about before deciding.
- It does not lower the PSLE Score. Only Standard Malay counts, so Standard Malay must stay strong.
- Later admission rules are specific. MOE's polytechnic aggregate (ELR2B2) does not count Higher Mother Tongue subjects, and JC admission uses either Higher Mother Tongue or Mother Tongue grades in the same aggregate, not both. Please check the current rules on the MOE JAE pages.
- It is extra work. Higher Malay adds a paper and a heavier reading and writing load, so children need time and interest to sustain it.
For the right child, the language depth and confidence are the real reward. We are happy to give an honest view at a free diagnostic assessment on whether Higher Malay suits your child now.
How We Teach Higher Malay at EduReach
- Composition: longer, more expressive writing with strong openings, well-chosen vocabulary and accurate sentence structure. Students can study model compositions such as those in Tinta Pintar, a collection of Malay compositions from eight schools, funded by the Malay Language Learning and Promotion Committee and published by the EduReach team.
- Proverbs and text editing: 20 of the 60 marks in Paper 2 come from these two skills, so we teach proverb meaning and use in context, and practise spotting and correcting errors in a text.
- Comprehension: practice on passages of 240 and 320 words, including vocabulary in context and answers that go beyond the text.
- Reading habit: wide reading is the best preparation for Higher Malay, and we guide students towards texts at a stretching level.
EduReachLearn (edureachlearn.com) is our in-house Learning Management System. It puts the latest MOE syllabus into quizzes and fill-in-the-blank questions, with some open-ended questions marked by a teacher. Every student can use it at home for the subject they are enrolled in, and each child works at their own level. EduReachLearn has Higher Malay courses at four stages: Primary 3 and 4, Primary 5 and 6, lower secondary and upper secondary. The Primary 5 and 6 course has essay practice built around 18 topics and scenarios, with 18 matching exercises on writing strong introductions, plus proverb matching, text editing, text completion and subjective comprehension. The secondary courses add formal and informal emails, and essay practice in narrative, descriptive and expository writing.
Our founder, Mdm Sharifah Md Kassim, is a certified Brain Gym Movement Facilitator, and EduReach uses Brain Gym movements in lessons. Brain Gym is a set of simple movements, such as the cross crawl and drinking water, that many teachers use to help children settle, focus and feel ready to learn. We use them for exactly those moments: at the start of a lesson, before a reading-aloud task, or when a child is nervous about speaking. Movement is one part of how we help children feel ready. The progress itself comes from practice and good teaching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Higher Malay count in the PSLE Score?
No. The PSLE Score is made up of English, Math, Science and Mother Tongue. For Malay families, Mother Tongue is Standard Malay (or Foundation Malay). Higher Malay is taken in addition.
Does Higher Malay replace Standard Malay?
At PSLE, no. Students sit Standard Malay, and Higher Malay is taken in addition. In JC and polytechnic admission, MOE does not allow both Higher and standard versions of the same Mother Tongue to be used in the same aggregate.
Which children should consider Higher Malay?
Children who are already doing very well in Standard Malay, enjoy reading and writing in Malay, and can manage the extra workload. Your child's school may also recommend it.
Can my child start Higher Malay in Secondary 1?
If your child meets MOE's PSLE criteria for Higher Malay in secondary school, the school can offer it in Secondary 1. Please check with the school. We can help your child prepare before and during Secondary 1.
