What Is Combined Science?

In Upper Secondary (Secondary 3 and 4), students can take the sciences separately (Physics, Chemistry and Biology, often called the Pure Sciences) or take two of them together as Combined Science. Combined Science is examined as one subject with one grade, and it covers two of the three sciences. In Upper Secondary, students taking Combined Science study two of the three sciences. The combinations we teach are Chemistry with Physics and Chemistry with Biology, so Chemistry is part of every combination.

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, students take each subject at G1, G2 or G3, and Combined Science is taken at G2 or G3, and this guide is for students at those two levels. From 2027, the O-Level and N-Level examinations are replaced by the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), and Secondary 4 students sit Science papers under SEC.

Combined Science is not the easy option. It has fewer topics than two full sciences, but students still have to understand concepts, interpret data, apply what they have learnt and answer accurately. The examination tests both sciences.

How EduReach Combined Science Classes Work

Our Combined Science class runs on alternating weeks:

•       Week 1: Chemistry

•       Week 2: Physics or Biology, depending on your child's combination

•       Week 3: Chemistry again, and so on through the term

Because Chemistry is part of both combinations, it is taught every second week. Students taking Science (Chemistry, Physics) alternate between those two sciences, and students taking Science (Chemistry, Biology) alternate between Chemistry and Biology. Each lesson focuses on one science, so the class stays clear and focused, and your child is not trying to learn two sciences in the same session.

Because the two sciences alternate, each science is taught in class every second week. Your child will need to keep up with school lessons and homework in the weeks between.

Why We Teach Combined Science This Way

Many families feel the cost of Upper Secondary tuition. Combined Science is graded as a single subject, so we organised our classes to match: one class, one subject fee, and both sciences covered across the term.

Instead of asking parents to pay for two separate science classes, we alternate the two sciences in a single class. Parents pay the tuition fee for one subject.

•       Materials fee: higher than for a single subject, because we need to provide books and materials for both sciences. Your child studies from two sets of resources (for example, Chemistry and Physics, or Chemistry and Biology), so the materials cost is greater. At the time of writing, our secondary materials fee is $110 a year for a single subject and $150 a year for Upper Secondary Combined Sciences.

How We Teach Combined Science

•       Understanding first: we explain why a concept works, so that students can answer questions they have not seen before, not just recall notes.

•       Data and practical skills: students practise reading graphs and tables, planning experiments and explaining results, which Combined Science papers regularly test.

•       Exam technique: we teach how to read questions carefully, structure answers for the marks available and manage time across both sciences.
