What Is G1 Science?

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, students take each subject at G1, G2 or G3. G1 is the most foundational of the three levels and broadly matches the former Normal (Technical) course. Students can take different subjects at different levels, so a child may take Science at G1 while taking other subjects at another level.

Unlike G2 and G3, where students can take Combined Science that pairs two sciences, G1 Science is a single subject that draws on all three sciences: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. SEAB's 2027 G1 Science syllabus is organised around everyday contexts such as machines, food and the human body, and students are expected to apply what they learn, not just recall facts.

The syllabus is examined in two papers, and all questions in both are compulsory. For the 2027 G1 Science syllabus, SEAB states that Paper 1 is answered on a computer. A large share of the marks is for handling and applying information, so students need practice with the way the questions are set.

How Our G1 Science Classes Work

Our G1 Science class runs weekly for Secondary 1 to 4. Because there is one paper covering three sciences, the class is built around the exam format:

•       Learn, then practise in exam style: each topic is followed by questions in the style students will meet in the papers, so they know what is being asked and how to answer.

•       Understand the paper: students learn the structure of the papers, how the marks are allocated, and how to manage their time across Physics, Chemistry and Biology topics.

•       Apply and interpret: we practise reading data, tables and diagrams and explaining what they show, because applying information carries a large share of the marks.

•       Materials: we teach from Ten-Year Series (TYS) past-year papers, together with assessment books and practice papers, so students work on real exam-style questions.

•       Regular checks: short quizzes and practice papers show which topics need more work.

•       Confidence: we celebrate progress, big or small, so students feel able to tackle unfamiliar questions.

G1 Science and the ITE Early Admissions Exercise

Many G1 students plan to continue to ITE after secondary school. The ITE Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) lets graduating students apply for ITE courses before their examination results are released. It is based on aptitude and interest, and applicants may be asked to submit a write-up or portfolio and attend an interview.

An EAE offer is conditional. It is confirmed only if the student's examination results meet the minimum entry requirements of the course when results are released. For many courses, the requirement is a pass in Mathematics or Science, so a steady Science grade gives students a way to meet it, and that is where our weekly, exam-focused class supports them.

Tuition does not replace the aptitude, interest and portfolio that the EAE looks for, and we cannot guarantee any admission outcome. What we can do is help your child build the Science results that support their choice of course.

Is G1 Science the same as Combined Science?

No. G1 Science is a single subject covering Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one paper. Combined Science is for students at G2 and G3, and pairs two sciences. Our Combined Science classes alternate the two sciences week by week, while our G1 Science class is built around the G1 exam format.

Which levels do you teach?

Will tuition help my child get into ITE?
